Red Deer’s Gerrie named finalist for CJHL top rookie

Alberta Junior Hockey League rookie of the year Chris Gerrie is a finalist for the Canadian Junior Hockey League top rookie award. Gerrie, a Red Deer native and Olds Grizzlys forward, led all first-year AJHL players in goals (18), assists (36) and points (54) and was second in team scoring with an average of 0.9 points per game.

Gerrie, a Red Deer native and Olds Grizzlys forward, led all first-year AJHL players in goals (18), assists (36) and points (54) and was second in team scoring with an average of 0.9 points per game.

A unanimous choice for the league’s 2013-14 all rookie team, the 17-year-old is the fourth player in Grizzlys franchise history to earn rookie of the year honours and has committed to Michigan Tech for the 2016-17 season.

Each of the 10 leagues within the CJHL selected a nominee for the rookie of the year honour. Following the initial round of voting, five players qualified as finalists for the award and will now advance to the final stage of the selection process.

The other finalists for the 2014 CJHL rookie of the year award are forward Neil Doef of the CCHL Smith Falls, Ont., Bears, goaltender Ryland Pashovitz of the SJHL Humboldt Broncos, forward Danton Heinen of the BCHL Surrey Eagles and defenceman Jake Walman of the OJHL Toronto Canadians.
