Soccer club has leading goaltender

It’s been a nice start to the women’s soccer league season for RDC Queens Lauren Good.

Good is the leading goaltender in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference and for her efforts she was named the ACAC athlete of the week last week and received the Canadian Colleges Athletic Conference female athlete of the week award.

Good has started four games for the Queens, posting a 3-0-1 record with a 0.75 goals-against-average and two shutouts.

The Queens will need her to continue her strong play this weekend as the RDC soccer teams travel to Calgary to face SAIT Saturday and Mount Royal Sunday.

The Queens can wrap up first place in the South Division with a pair of wins while the Kings, 1-3-2, need a pair of wins to get back in the playoff race.

• Kings second-year striker Joe Ziebart scored three times in a pair of games against Lakeland College and received the Boston Pizza RDC male athlete of the week award.

Jodi Sanguin, who won the ACAC Grand Prix No. 3 cross-country race Saturday in Lethbridge took home the top female award.

• The volleyball Queens will host the annual Ramada Inns and Suites Wild Rose Classic Friday-Sunday at RDC.

The Queens play in Pool A and open Friday at 4 p.m. against Ambrose University College of Calgary. They meet Concordia College of Edmonton at 8 p.m. Friday before clashing with the RDC Alumni (veterans) at 10:15 a.m. and Grande Prairie College at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The RDC Alumni (recent) competes in Pool B along with King’s University College, Keyano, College of the Rockies from Cranbrook and Olds College.

The quarter-finals run Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. with the semifinals Sunday at 11 a.m. and the final at 2 p.m.

• The volleyball Kings return to action tonight when they host the RDC Alumni at 8 p.m. at RDC.

Tim Gourlay, who played pro in Germany last year, and Chaim Schalk, who is on the national beach volleyball team, are expected to be on hand along with the likes of Robert Ellis, Brad Bell and Adam Roth.

• The cross-country running team will compete in the ACAC Grand Prix No. 4 at SAIT Saturday while the golf team will be at the ACAC championships Sunday and Monday in Medicine Hat.

• Both the Kings and Queens basketball squads are in Calgary for tournament play.

The Kings are at Mount Royal University where they face MRU Thursday at 8 p.m., SAIT Friday at 6 p.m. and Medicine Hat Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Queens are at SAIT and take on Lakeland Thursday at 6 p.m., NAIT Friday at 2 p.m. and Olds Saturday at 2 p.m.

• The hockey Queens meet the Edge Hockey Academy at the Edge school Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. They host the Edge school Oct. 13 at the Arena.
