Red Deer native Gabrielle Waddell has been selected to compete in the first two World Cups of the short track speed skating season. Caroline Truchon of Chicoutimi, Que., Waddell and Jessica Hewitt of Langley, B.C., placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively at the Team Canada World Cup selection meet held Sept, 16-18 in Montreal. Marianne St. Gelais of St. Felicien, Que., Valerie Maltais of La Baie, Que., and Marie-Eve Drolet of Laterriere, Que., were the top three ranked women following the meet and were automatically named to the team. Speed Skating Canada’s short track high performance committee met following the World Cup Selections to name the three additions to both the women’s and men’s teams for the first two World Cups and to identify skaters for the third and fourth meets. The World Cup season opens Oct. 21-23 in Salt Lake City with the second meet, Oct. 28-30 in Saguenay, Que. The third meet is Dec. 2-4 in Nagoya, Japan, and the fourth will be in Shanghai, China, Dec. 9-11. The 23-year-old Waddell competed in two World Cup events last season with her best finish a ninth in the 1000-metres in World Cup No. 4. She was on the relay team that placed eighth in World Cup No. 3.
