Red Deer City coach Dave McCarthy liked his team’s effort Friday night at Great Chief Park.

The result? Not so much.

Despite creating numerous scoring chances, City dropped a 1-0 Alberta Major Women’s Soccer League decision to the Calgary Alliance, an outcome that left McCarthy feeling as though the better team came out on the short end.

“Tonight was a game that really is tough to define,” he said. “We dominated the game, especially in the second half. We pretty much set up camp in their half for 45 minutes and had chance after chance after chance.”

But the local side couldn’t buy a goal after City keeper Lauren Good surrendered a 17th-minute marker to Krista Gummeringer.

“We had plenty of chances, but ultimately you’re judged on the goals that you score,” he said. “We were unable to do that tonight, but the girls put in one heck of an effort and they should be proud of themselves. They dominated the game and they were really hard done by in the end.”

The setback was City’s third consecutive one-goal loss and left the squad with one win, two ties and five losses to date.

“Of course they’re frustrated, but there’s no quit in any of these girls. They’re fantastic players and they work very hard,” said McCarthy. “They’re frustrated that they didn’t score the two goals they needed and didn’t win the game like our performance warranted.”

City will return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. at Great Chief against the Edmonton Angels.

“We can eradicate the memory of this loss,” said McCarthy, who does not, however, want his players to forget the manner in which they moved forward Friday.

“We’ve had some good performances and some poor performances this year and I think this was our best attacking performance all year,” said the coach. “On a different day probably three or four goals would have gone in for us. They didn’t go in for us tonight but I think we can be proud of the performance we put in.”
