If you’ve ever wondered what goes on in the teaching spaces of Red Deer College’s School of Creative Arts, some upcoming student showcase events offer you a good chance to find out.
From visual arts and music to live and animation filmmaking, the inspired work they’ve been engaged in during the latest college term will be on display at multiple venues around Red Deer.
Jason Frizzell, the Dean of the School of Creative Arts, says the events are designed as extensions of the curriculum.
“It’s about taking what they learn, putting those skills into practice and getting their work out there,” he says. “It’s one thing to rehearse a piece, but it’s quite another to perform it in front of an audience. It’s one thing to produce a piece of artwork but quite another to hang it on the wall in the museum for the public to see.”
You’ll experience multiple artistic mediums
On April 5 at the college’s Welikoklad Event Centre, students from the areas of music, film, visual art, animation and theatre will take you on a journey through the creative arts with “The Final Take Off.” At this free, first-time event you’ll hear and see short musical performances, watch film and animation projects looping in the Centre’s cinema and view students’ visual arts works in the gallery.
There’s other showcases in the mix, including:
- Fast Forward, April 6-25: This year-end exhibition at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery will feature the works of the first- and second-year Visual Arts Diploma students. You’ll discover everything from drawing, painting and sculpture to ceramics and mixed-media.
- Symphonic Winds, April 18: This ensemble, which includes 80 per cent community musicians plus students, RDC staff and Creative Arts faculty, takes to the RDC mainstage for their final concert of 2018-19. You’ll hear an eclectic collection of songs from around the world, from Cajun folk to ancient Mediterranean dances. Showtime for this free event is 7 p.m.
- Film and animation showcases, May 3-4: The Friday night will see first-year students in the college’s new Animation and Visual Effects program screen their creations, while third-year students from the Motion Picture Arts program will show works in progress. “It’s interesting, because it is so raw and really shows the nuts and bolts behind what may turn into a animation or feature film project,” Frizzell says. Saturday sees graduating students screen finished shorts, multimedia projects, movie trailers they’ve been working on and more. Screenings happen both days at 4 and 7 p.m. at the Welikoklad cinema; admission is by donation.
- Robin Lambert Exhibition, May 3-June 30: Find this multi-talented faculty member’s work displayed at the Welikoklad Event Centre.
