We might not give much thought to our pet's oral health, but as anyone who's experienced "dog breath" knows, our furry friends can have the same dental concerns as we do – with many of the same results.

To encourage proactive care, Poplar Grove Veterinary Services is offering a 20 per cent discount on all dental procedures for small animals during February – Veterinary Dental Month.

"If you know your dog is due for a dental procedure this is the month to take advantage," says Dr. Stacey Homer, Owner and veterinarian at Poplar Grove Veterinary Services.

"We do have limited spots in February, but if you call in January or February to book for dental month and our spots are filled, we will honour this deal for the next available time slot, even if that means we book you in March."

Common dental issues in pets mirror those in humans, including tartar buildup leading to tooth decay, gingivitis and pain.

“Often tooth decay is accelerated in animals as brushing isn't as common,” Dr Homes notes. “There are other tools such as dental chews, water additives, and enzymatic wipes that can help, but just like people, some dogs and cats are genetically more predisposed to dental disease than others."

Breeds such as toy poodles, chihuahuas, and Jack Russell terriers often experience more rapidly developing dental disease compared to larger breeds like Labradors, shepherds and huskies.

"Most small to medium dogs will need at least one dental procedure in their lifetime, while some small to toy dogs will require two to three, if not yearly cleanings,” says Dr. Stacey Homer, Owner and veterinarian at Poplar Grove Veterinary Services. Photo courtesy of Poplar Grove.

Neglecting dental health can have serious consequences. "If left untreated, dental disease can lead to pain, loss of sleep and decrease in overall health, increased risk in heart disease, tooth abscesses, bone regression or gingival hyperplasia, and infection," she says. Notably, heart disease has been linked to dental disease in animals, similar to humans.

“At Poplar Grove Veterinary Services, the veterinarians and anesthesiologists are well-trained and monitor each animal with an individually tailored specific protocol for their well-being and safety," Dr. Homer emphasizes. Additionally, fluids and bloodwork are included in quotes for procedures to provide transparent and upfront pricing.

The benefits of dental care extend beyond health. "It is amazing – when some of these dogs come in, we extract their whole mouth as their dental health is so bad, and two weeks later the owners report a much happier, healthier, active dog," Dr.Homer shares. "Plus, the nasty breath is gone, so snuggling isn't as unpleasant."

Pet owners are encouraged to take advantage of the February promotion by booking appointments early, as slots are limited.
