With the weather getting warmer, many of us are doing our spring cleaning.
Yet as we purge our homes of things we no longer use, many of those things still have value to someone else. Before you shed those unwanted items, consider donating them to raise funds for local mental health services in Central Alberta.
The Canadian Mental Health Association Central Alberta Region is excited to announce their second annual Giant Garage Sale at the Pidherney Centre in Red Deer, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 24 to 26. If you have household items you no longer need, they’re accepting garage sale donations at the centre from June 1 to 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. (Donations only accepted 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on market days as there is no access)
Items not accepted are: mattresses and box spring, clothes, shoes, TVs, computers, books, large appliances or tires.
For 30 years CMHA Central Alberta has played a major role in addressing the education, housing, income and support needs of the community and individuals with mental illness, brain injuries and addiction living in Central Alberta.
Through recovery-focused support, education and advocacy, staff and volunteers strive for the best possible care, rehabilitation and recovery for individuals, promote best practices based on current research, and support mental health and wellness through education.
“With the increase in mental health challenges over the last few years, events like our community garage sale not only raise awareness about the importance of mental health, but also invaluable funds for much-needed local programs and services, right here in Central Alberta,” says Stephanie Rhodes, Community Engagement and Fund Development at CMHA Central Alberta.
Beyond donations of garage sale items, the non-profit organization is also looking for volunteers to help with donation drop-off, and especially for the garage sale itself. (Food and drink and a volunteer rest area will also be provided.)
“Shopping or volunteering at the garage sale is a chance for the community to come out this summer to check out the great selection, pick up some fun or useful items and support CMHA at the same time!” Rhodes says.
