After five successful spring fundraising galas, Red Deer Hospice Society has a request: Please be a no-show this year.
It’s not that they don’t want to see you, of course, but as the society stands knee-deep in construction dust to better serve the community, and the city recoups from an amazing two weeks of Canada Games, “it was time to do something a little different,” says Lori Dufresne, Red Deer Hospice Society Event Co-ordinator.

Here’s what’s happening: “We always have a lot of fun at the spring gala, but this year we’re doing something a little more grassroots: The No Show Gala,” Dufresne says.
Thanks to some amazing supporters in the local community, virtually all of the anticipated $100,000 revenue will go directly to expansion of palliative care and related services for local families – six additional rooms that will serve 100 more families each year.
- One Week in Ultimate Luxury – Courtesy the Laser and Skin Care Medspa, choose from a stay at the Mayan Riviera or Nuevo Puerto Vallarta Grand Luxxe Resort (non-inclusive; all weeks available except Christmas week; airfare not included). Relax in a King Master Suite with personal plunge pool on a generous deck, second bedroom with two double beds or one king in lock-off compartment; gourmet kitchen; 2 Jacuzzi tubs; living area sleeper sofa. Sleeps up to eight (max. six adults); golf and massage passes also included.
- Calgary Stampede Concert for 12 Guests – This unique experience courtesy of Calgary Sports and Entertainment includes a la carte dinner in the Saddledome Grill before the show, 12 concert seats directly outside the restaurant, all beverages and two parking passes.
- Hockey Night in Canada – Four return flights from Calgary/Edmonton to Toronto to a Toronto Maple Leafs Game, with a bonus tour of the Hockey Night in Canada studio, plus a $1,000 accommodation credit, all courtesy Ron and Cari McLean, Glover Tucks and Phone Experts.
Be a No-Show:
Tickets for the No Show Gala are just $25, with only 4,000 printed. Purchase online and at Red Deer Hospice.
“Since we launched before Christmas, tickets have been a hit as gifts, and we’ve also had many businesses buy bundles as thank-yous to staff and clients,” Dufresne says.
And with the Support a Stud initiative, anyone who buys four tickets will have their name preserved for posterity on studs within the walls during construction.
Winning tickets will be drawn Sunday, May 5 at the Run/Hike for Hospice, a 1km/4km hike through the beautiful Kerry Wood Nature Centre Sanctuary or a 5km/10km along the city’s scenic riverside trails.
Walk/run participants receive a T-shirt and a barbecue lunch, and both individuals and teams are welcome – register today!
