JOS, Nigeria — An official says at least 11 people have been killed in multiple Christmas eve blasts in central Nigeria, a region violently divided between Christians and Muslims.

The Plateau state information commissioner told The Associated Press Saturday that he counted 11 dead bodies at two sites rocked by bomb blasts within the central city of Jos Friday evening.

Gregory Yenlong said nobody has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

He said the attack “is unfortunate, especially at this time when we want to ensure sustainable peace in the state.”

Jos is the epicenter of religious violence in Nigeria’s “middle belt,” where dozens of ethnic groups vie for political and economic control. The violence often falls along religious lines and has claimed more than 500 lives this year.
