OTTAWA — Five Canadians were among the passengers caught up in a bizarre hijacking in Mexico.

A Bolivian preacher hijacked an Aeromexico 737 jet Wednesday as it flew between the resort town of Cancun and Mexico City.

All 103 passengers and crew were released unharmed when the plane landed in Mexico City and the 44-year-old man was taken into custody.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says consular officials were waiting for the Canadians at the airport to offer help.

All five safely continued their travel.

The department is urging Canadians to check their travel arrangements before heading to Mexico City’s airport.
