Five people dead after flaming head-on collision north of Saskatoon

SASKATOON — After five people died in what appears to be a fiery head-on collision Thursday, police were still trying to reconstruct the accident and identify the victims.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Warren Gherasim said it’s likely the most serious accident this year in Saskatchewan.

“I don’t recall any other accidents in the province where the death count was as high,” he said Thursday.

Four died at the scene and one vehicle was engulfed in flames by the time paramedics arrived. A 19-year-old man died later in hospital.

There were three people in one vehicle and two in the other but Gherasim said they were still trying to identify them Thursday. Both vehicles had Saskatchewan plates.

“We have not yet confirmed the identities of all five so I couldn’t even speculate as to the age of the people.”

Police said the accident occurred in the early morning hours on the Dalmeny Highway, a commuter road north of Saskatoon, which was closed while the investigation continued.
