WINNIPEG — A former Winnipeg police officer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting his terminally ill ex-wife.
The 53-year-old man, whose name can’t be released because of a court order, had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of break and enter to commit aggravated sexual assault.
Court heard the man broke into the woman’s home in July 2008 and physically and sexually assaulted her over the course of several hours.
He knew that she had cancer and was weakened from undergoing chemotherapy.
The woman managed to call 911 when her assailant was in another room.
Court was told the attack was prompted by the man’s anger at his ex-wife’s decision to sell their home.
