High winds force hundreds of workers from downtown Regina office building

High winds have forced hundreds of workers out of the Saskatchewan Government Insurance building in downtown Regina.

REGINA — High winds have forced hundreds of workers out of the Saskatchewan Government Insurance building in downtown Regina.

A government spokesman says the gusty winds loosened a metal panel from the building Friday morning and the workers were told to leave as a precaution.

The spokesman says engineers have determined the building is structurally sound but the panel can’t be fully repaired until the winds die down.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning for the area and forecast gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour.

Officials say a section of Highway 11 between Dundurn and Davidson has been closed due to collisions and a couple of semi trailers have toppled over on the Trans-Canada Highway.

RCMP were advising motorists to avoid driving on highways west and south of Saskatoon.
