YELLOWKNIFE — An Alberta man convicted of shooting an RCMP officer in the Northwest Territories is appealing his first-degree murder conviction.
Emrah Bulatci’s appeal notice says his charter rights were violated when his jailhouse conversations were recorded and later presented as evidence against him at his trial.
Bulatci, who is 25, also challenges more than a dozen rulings the judge made during the four-week trial, including instructions given to the jury.
Bulatci was sentenced last month to life in prison with no chance at parole for 25 years after a jury found him guilty in the death of Const. Chris Worden in October 2007.
Court heard Worden was shot four times as he was chasing Bulatci, who had come to Hay River to sell drugs.
Bulatci testified that he never meant to fatally wound Worden when he shot at his legs, and that the last two shots went off accidentally while the pair scuffled on the ground.
