UPDATE:

ROUGEMONT, Que. — Two cyclists are dead and four others are injured after being hit by a pickup truck just south of Montreal.

The gruesome scene played out this morning on a highway and left scraps of twisted metal scattered along the pavement.

The six were members of a cycling club and were heading to Sherbrooke for pleasure when the tragedy occurred in Rougemont.

Quebec provincial police Sgt. Claude Denis says alcohol was not a factor.

The six included five women and one man.

Both the deceased are women.

ROUGEMONT, Que. — Six cyclists were struck by a car as they rode along a rural highway near Montreal, leaving a gruesome scene where scraps of twisted metal were scattered along the pavement.

Provincial police spokesman Sgt. Claude Denis said three of the cyclists were seriously injured Friday, and efforts have been made to resuscitate two of them.

The accident occurred in Rougemont, Que., just south of Montreal. It caused a shutdown of debris-strewn Highway 112.

“We fear for the lives of three cyclists, and for the three others we’re talking major injuries,” Denis said.

There were speed bikes, helmets, sunglasses and even a sports watch scattered across a large distance while orange police tape separated the road from the neighbouring municipality.

Denis said it wasn’t yet clear whether the driver of the vehicle was being held responsible: “For the moment it’s too early to conclude anything.”

The cyclists included five women and one man who were quickly evacuated to hospital.

Police initially said there had been four injuries, but soon updated the number.
