RCMP investigating threats following reports of sled dog slaughter

WHISTLER, B.C. — The RCMP are investigating threats after reports that a B.C. dogsledding company slaughtered 100 animals when bookings dried up following the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The Mounties and the SPCA confirmed this week they are both looking into allegations that 100 sled dogs were culled in April of 2010, some badly maimed and writhing in pain as they were shot and dumped in a mass grave.

Now, police say they are also investigating threats connected to the incident, although they won’t disclose the nature of the threats or say who they were directed against.

Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair says the threats have been “serious,” and include comments on social media websites and at least one email.

Several Facebook groups have been formed to attack a Whistler tour operator connected to the slaughter, and demand criminal charges for what they describe as the “murders” of the animals.

Whistler-based Outdoor Adventures says the dogs were under the care of Howling Dog Tours, which it describes as a subcontractor, and Outdoor Adventures says it had nothing to do with the decision to cull the animals.
