Saskatoon is top romantic Canadian city

Here’s hoping Cupid has a good parka — Saskatoon is the most romantic city in Canada.

Here’s hoping Cupid has a good parka — Saskatoon is the most romantic city in Canada.

That determination by online retailer Amazon.ca is based on sales per 100,000 population of bodice-ripping novels, books on sex and relationships, and sales of Michael Buble discs.

“Michael Buble is a fantastic Canadian singer, known for his smooth voice,” explained Amazon spokeswoman Sarah Gelman.

“Since there is no category in music that is specifically romantic, we identified a Canadian singer we thought embodied romance.”

Calgary, Victoria, Regina and Guelph, Ont., rounded out the top five. John Nemeth, director of Amazon.ca, suggested that beneath Calgary’s corporate image is a playful, erotic side. Calgarians are “undercover romantics, maybe,” he said.

But Quebec’s largest city didn’t even make it into the top 20, while spots six to 10 went to Kingston, Ont., Kelowna, B.C., Edmonton, Winnipeg and London, Ont.

The top 20 was rounded out by Peterborough, Ont., Ottawa, Thunder Bay, Ont., Abbotsford, B.C., Sudbury, Ont., Halifax, Brantford, Ont., Barrie, Ont., St. John’s, and last but not least, Windsor, Ont.
