Saskatoon man jailed for dragging police officer after panicking during stop

SASKATOON — A Saskatoon man convicted of dragging a police officer with his car at speeds reaching 90 kilometres an hour has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Wesley Klassen pleaded guilty in September to assault and endangering the life of Const. Colin Boyenko.

Court heard Klassen was pulled over in June for running a red light, but the 58-year-old driver got scared and hit the gas.

Boyenko grabbed a seatbelt in Klassen’s vehicle and was dragged about two blocks before he was thrown clear.

The officer injured his right shoulder but was able to pull his gun and fire four shots at the fleeing vehicle — an action which is under investigation by police.

Klassen told court he’s remorseful for what happened to Boyenko, whose career in the police force may be cut short because of the effects of his injury.
