CALGARY — Canada’s governor general received a good old-fashioned western welcome in his visit to Calgary.

David Johnston received the white cowboy hat that symbolizes Calgary from Mayor Naheed Nenshi (nah-HED NEN-shee) and proudly recited an accompanying oath before joining in a big shout of “Yahoo!”

Nenshi said the hat appeared to be empty but was filled with “good wishes” from city council and Calgarians.

Johnston spoke to a class of Grade 9 students from Calgary’s Sir Wilfrid Laurier School.

He told them about how Sir Wilfrid Laurier University was given its name and also explained French explorer Samuel de Champlain’s contribution to Canada.

Johnston also visited the Calgary Poppy Fund Veteran’s Food Bank, which provides aid to military veterans.
