18-year-old man in custody in connection with stabbing in Eastview

An 18-year-old man is in custody after a 16-year-old was stabbed in a street brawl in Red Deer in the early hours on Thursday.

An 18-year-old man is in custody after a 16-year-old was stabbed in a street brawl in Red Deer in the early hours on Thursday.

RCMP said the victim was stabbed during a fist fight involving a number of people at 39th Street and 40th Avenue around 1:30 a.m. The victim, a male youth, made his way to the nearby East 40th Pub for help and police and ambulance were called.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was last reported in stable condition and is expected to be released from hospital in the next few days, said police.

A suspect fled the area on foot and police called in a dog team. The search led to a downtown residence and an area of Ross Street and Gaetz Avenue was blocked off after 2 a.m.

The suspect was not found there but was picked up about 9:30 a.m. at a residence near 50th Street and 50th Avenue.

Victor L’Hirondelle has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

L’Hirondelle appeared in Red Deer provincial court on Friday. He remains in custody and returns to court on June 17.
