Construction work on 19 Street in Red Deer is expected to be complete in October, as planned.

The 19 Street Improvement Project aims to improve safety, mobility and capacity on one of Red Deer’s major arterial roadways.

“The reconstruction of 19th Street was scheduled to be done this year by Oct. 15. We’re still on track to meet that date,” said Christine Villeneuve, City of Red Deer project manager.

There will still be more work to be done in 2024, as the project is taking place over this and next year’s construction seasons.

The street, from Gaetz Avenue and Irwin Avenue, has been impacted by the project, with the road becoming a one-lane road for both westbound and eastbound drivers.

According to the City of Red Deer’s website, base work continues to progress on the eastbound lanes and pavement has been removed up to Irwin Avenue.

Crews are beginning to pave the section of roadway between 46 Avenue and 40 Avenue while they work on the underground portion of 40 Avenue to Irwin Avenue, the city site states, adding the intersection of Irwin Avenue and 19 Street is right-turn only.

When paving is complete, two-way traffic will be diverted to the eastbound lanes and crews will begin removing pavement and concrete on the westbound lanes. The intersections of 19 Street and 49 Avenue, 46 Avenue, Sharpe Avenue and Irwin Avenue, will remain right-turn only for this work.

Construction work has been smooth up to this point, Villeneuve noted.

“It’s gone really well. We expect weather delays – that’s part of life in Alberta. We expected some delays with Westerner Days as well,” said Villeneuve, adding these kinds of delays are taken into consideration when planning a construction project like this.

Meanwhile, another notable construction project is nearing completion this week.

The Taylor Drive Bridge will re-open this week as a two-lane road for both northbound and southbound traffic following construction that began in May.

The only thing remaining on that project is some minor landscaping work, a city representative stated.
