North Shore Rescue says it rescued two hikers caught in the darkness on a trial near Cypress Mountain.

A man and woman in their early 20s called 9-1-1 Friday evening after they were unprepared to continue hiking in the dark.

North Shore Rescue says they were able to locate the pair using co-ordinates from their cellphone and a five-person field team found them and escorted the hikers to safety.

The man and woman are in good health.

North Shore Rescue says its important to plan hikes to avoid getting caught in the dark or to bring the necessary equipment to be able to continue without light.

The group’s website outlines a list of 10 essential items to take on any hike, including a light, signalling device, fire starter and shelter.
