A Red Deer man, charged with a murder that was committed more than a year ago, made his first appearance in court Wednesday.

The suspect, who is now 18, was arrested in Vancouver last week by police investigating the shooting death of Lloyd Robert Sarson, 25, in Red Deer on Jan. 1, 2013.

The accused man made his first appearance in Red Deer court on Wednesday morning, by closed-circuit TV from the Red Deer Remand Centre. His name cannot be released because he was under 18 at the time of the offence.

A charge of first-degree murder was read to him. Crown prosecutor Robin Snider then notified Judge Gordon Yake that if the man is convicted she will apply to have him sentenced as an adult.

Duty counsel Mark Gottlieb assisted the suspect, who is in the process of hiring a lawyer from Calgary.

He has reserved his plea until Tuesday and remains in custody pending that court appearance.
