22-year-old driver charged in fatal crash makes first court appearance

The driver of a pickup truck charged in connection with an early morning accident in Red Deer Sunday that killed the parents of five children made a brief court appearance this morning.

Chad Mitchell Olsen, 22, of Sedalia, has been charged with two counts of impaired driving causing death, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and two counts of driving with a blood alcohol over 0.08 causing death. Sedalia is a small hamlet 175 km southeast of Stettler.

Olsen, who remains in custody, is expected to be back in court this afternoon to speak to his release.

Bradley, 34, and Krista Howe, 35, were identified in court as the victims of the collision that happened about 2 a.m.

The couple died after their eastbound car and a pickup southbound on 30th Avenue at Ironstone Drive collided. The couple were pronounced dead at the scene by fire-medics.

The driver of the pickup was treated and released from hospital. RCMP arrested him and took him into custody Sunday.

RCMP spokeswoman Sabrina Grunow said police are still investigating the accident, which occurred at a signalled intersection. Police are asking that anyone who saw the collision or the vehicles prior to the collision to call RCMP at 403-343-5575.

Meanwhile, a Facebook memorial page has been set up for the Howes, both of Red Deer.

A trust fund has been established for the Howes' children, according to the memorial page.

The Brad & Krista Howe Memorial Trust Fund has been set up at the Foam Lake Credit Union in Saskatchewan.
