Police have arrested a suspect in the assault and attempted abduction of a 13-year-old girl outside the G.H. Dawe Centre on Monday.

Police say the suspect vehicle was located abandoned in the Parkland Mall parking lot at 6 p.m.

The male suspect was arrested after police searched the area.

RCMP confirm that the truck used in this attempted abduction had been stolen from a Highland Green residence at 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 22.

The investigation continues and RCMP will issue an update once charges against the suspect have been sworn before the courts.

Police say a young girl was on the north side of the centre at about 1 p.m. when a man driving a Silver Dakota stopped his vehicle and asked if he could use her cellphone.

He then attempted to pull the girl into the back of the truck. She resisted and fought back despite being struck, kicked and choked. Eventually the man let her go after taking her iPhone and fleeing in his vehicle.

The girl was taken to the hospital where she was treated for non-life treating injuries.
