A Red Deer man accused in an attempted robbery at a campground has fired his lawyer before he barely got started in court on Friday.

Walter Kubanek was defence counsel for Michael Holt, 33, for all of five minutes.

Holt appeared in Red Deer provincial court, still in the early stages of the court proceedings for charges, including those laid against him following a June 5 attempted robbery of a vehicle at Kelly’s Campground, west of Innisfail.

Kubanek began by filing his designation of counsel and informing the court that he would be representing Holt after an earlier discussion with the accused.

Within minutes, Holt told the court that he didn’t want Kubanek and chose instead to apply for new counsel.

Holt has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime, possession of cocaine, failing to comply with the conditions of an undertaking and failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused will make his next appearance in Red Deer provincial court on Wednesday.
