Accused man was belligerent, witness testifies at murder trial

The trial of a man accused of ramming his truck into a crowd of people outside a bar has been told he was drunk and belligerent that night.

CALGARY — The trial of a man accused of ramming his truck into a crowd of people outside a bar has been told he was drunk and belligerent that night.

Jeffrey Leinen has admitted he was the driver of the truck that ran over and killed 18-year-old Nicholas Baier, but has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.

Cody Davis, who uses a wheelchair, testified Tuesday that he was hanging out with friends at the Texas Mickey bar in Olds.

He said Leinen approached the group, began calling Davis derogatory names and then pushed him, a scuffle that ended up with Davis falling out of his wheelchair.

Leinen was then thrown out of the bar.

On Monday the court was shown surveillance footage of the truck driving directly into a group of young people.

Baier was a student attending Olds College, an agricultural school, so he could take over his family’s ranch when his dad retired.
