A man charged with first-degree murder has been remanded for a 30-day psychological assessment in Calgary.
Christopher Martin Fleig, 25, of Red Deer will undergo a psychiatric exam at the Southern Alberta Forensic Centre for an acute manic disorder or possible bipolar disorder, Crown prosecutor Jason Snider told provincial court Tuesday.
Following the assessment Fleig returns to court on May 7.
Snider told Judge John Holmes the accused doesn’t have a lawyer so the Crown will contact the Legal Aid Society of Alberta for one to be appointed for him.
Fleig is also charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with what RCMP described earlier as a gang-related shooting that left a man dead nearly a year ago on an Inglewood street.
Fleig was charged more than a week ago by Red Deer RCMP following a lengthy investigation.
Brandon Neil Prevey, 29, was found shot to death in a vehicle after attending a house party on Ibbotson Close in Red Deer on April 5, 2009.
Prevey also known as ‘Commando,’ was shot sitting in the driver’s seat of Jeep and had a woman next to him when a car pulled up sometime around 3 a.m.
Someone inside the car began firing shots, striking Prevey several times. The woman wasn’t hit after ducking down.
Police said earlier they believed the murder was gang-related.
