The City of Red Deer is encouraging voters to get to the polls early for the upcoming municipal election.

Advance Vote opens Monday and will run for 13 consecutive days.

Advance vote will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day until Oct. 16. Voters will be able to select one of three advance voting locations: Parkland Mall, Baymont by Wyndham Red Deer and Westerner Park.

“We are encouraging Red Deer voters to vote early this election,” said returning officer Samantha Rodwell.

“The advance vote offers voters numerous opportunities to cast their ballot early while helping us reduce the number of people at voting stations on election day.”

On Election Day, Oct. 18, voters will not have a dedicated neighbourhood voting station, but will instead have their choice of eight voting stations across the city.

Larger facilities were selected over small community facilities to ensure capacity and space for physical distancing. Voting stations will operate at one-third capacity in keeping with current provincial public health guidelines.

“We selected larger facilities for voting stations to ensure we could implement health measures necessary to keep voters and staff safe in a pandemic election,” said Rodwell.

“As an added bonus, voters will be able to select their voting station based on a time and location that is convenient to them.”

The city’s elections website will host a voting station map with real-time updates about wait times at each location. Information will be updated regularly throughout the day on advance vote days as well as election day, giving Red Deer voters an informed choice about where to cast their vote.

Eligible Red Deer voters will cast their votes for offices of mayor and councillors for the City of Red Deer, school trustee for either the Red Deer Public Schools or the Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, three senate appointments and two referendum questions.

Information about the election, including details about where to vote, who is running and how to vote is available on the Elections website at elections.reddeer.ca.
