Two years ago, Anne Marie Landry hit a bump in her road.

Run commuting home from work she fell down and pulled a muscle that sidelined the marathoner for almost two years.

After running a “training” marathon in Phoenix in February to prepare, the Woody’s Marathon on Sunday was her first attempt at competing since her injury.

“I just came off of injury so it was kind of a recovery race,” she said sitting down on the curb after crossing the finish line.

“I’m pretty happy with it, it’s not my best time, but I’m pretty happy with how I was able to struggle through.”

She finished three minutes ahead of her next nearest competitor and was the first woman marathoner to cross the finish line. Even though she said it wasn’t her best time, she finished with a time of 3:28:22.17.

“It was beautiful out there today,” she said. “It was very hot so a lot of people out there are going to be quite warm, but right by the river there were a lot of trees and shade to help out.

“It’s a beautiful course. I’d never been to Red Deer and it’s a pretty city.”

Though modest about how she did, this was the first marathon she has ever won.

“This was the first one I was going to try and race in,” said Landry. “It wasn’t my day today, but it was a beautiful day. I’m happy I did this race.

“This is unusual. This is not something that is normal for me.”

Cassandra Tomas, of Sherwood Park, was the second woman marathoner to cross the finish line. She finished with a time of 3:31:22.75. Heather Chatenay, of Calgary, placed third with a time of 3:32:40.36.

Kristen Spady, of Red Deer, was the first woman across the finish line in the half marathon. She finished with a time of 1:23:27.77. Jen Moroz, of Vancouver, came in second with a time of 1:25:01.08 and Cosette Lemelin, of Edmonton, came in third with a time of 1:31:29.88.

Morgan Lawley, of Edmonton, was the first woman across teh finish line in the 10 km run. She finished with a time of 40:01.48.
