Alberta has 1,661 new COVID-19 cases

Another 1,661 COVID-19 cases were identified, and 27 new virus-related deaths were reported in Alberta between Aug. 9 and Aug. 15.

Another 1,661 COVID-19 cases were identified, and 27 new virus-related deaths were reported in Alberta between Aug. 9 and Aug. 15.

The numbers are down slightly from the 1,808 COVID-19 cases and eight deaths that were identified in the province the previous week.

There have now been a total of 4,721 deaths connected to COVID in Alberta — 27 more deaths than the 4,694 reported last week.

The provincial government released the Aug. 9 to 15 COVID numbers Wednesday, showing there are currently 818 hospitalizations — up 70 from a week earlier — in Alberta. There are still 28 people in intensive care, the same number for two weeks now.

The seven-day average positivity rate has decreased to 21.93 per cent, down from 23.73 per cent a week ago.

As of Aug. 2, the province also opened up the COVID-19 vaccine to kids under 5. As of Aug. 15, 6,053 kids between the ages of 1-4 have received a COVID-19 shot and 567 children between six and 11 months have received their first dose.

In Central Zone, there are 71 people in hospital — down six from last week — and two in ICU, the same as a week ago.

Fifty-two new cases — up from 43 a week earlier — were identified in the City of Red Deer over the seven-day period ending this past Monday, according to geospatial mapping on the provincial government’s website.

Over that same time period, 13 cases — down eight from last week — were identified in Red Deer County, five in Lacombe County, and two in the City of Lacombe.

Mountain View County recorded eight, Sylvan Lake had eight, Clearwater County five, two were identified in Stettler County and one was reported in Olds.

The City of Camrose added 10 new cases, Kneehill County added six, Drumheller added six and Camrose County had one.

Wetaskiwin County, including Maskwacis, had 12 new cases over the past seven days, while Rimbey, including West Ponoka County and part of Lacombe County, had five and Ponoka, including east Ponoka County, had two.
