LETHBRIDGE — Alberta Health Services says it has postponed almost five dozen surgeries at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge after a dark residue was found on some instruments.

The fine residue appeared after the equipment was cleaned and sterilized.

Alberta Health Services says instruments will be sent to other facilities to be cleaned until the problem is resolved.

Health officials say the residue presents a low risk to patient safety.

Emergency surgeries and some elective procedures will continue using equipment from other sites.

Patients affected by cancellations are being contacted for re-booking.
