Alberta legislature committee claws back cash from auditor general

An Alberta legislature committee, acting under the direction of Premier Jim Prentice, has clawed back more than half a million dollars from the auditor general.

EDMONTON — An Alberta legislature committee, acting under the direction of Premier Jim Prentice, has clawed back more than half a million dollars from the auditor general.

The Progressive Conservative members on the all-party committee voted to revoke $546,000.

The money was part of $1.8 million cut from the auditor general’s budget in December as part of government reductions to deal with collapsing oil prices.

The auditor general last week convinced enough Tories on the committee to restore some of the money.

Prentice said a day later that he wanted the committee to meet again and reverse the vote, because the government couldn’t afford it.

Opposition members say Prentice is making a mockery of the independence of legislature committees.
