Alberta legislature sits Nov. 17, pension reform bills won’t be reintroduced

The Alberta government has announced the fall legislature session will begin Nov. 17 with a speech from the throne.

EDMONTON — The Alberta government has announced the fall legislature session will begin Nov. 17 with a speech from the throne.

It’s a later date than usual, but gives Premier Jim Prentice and two of his cabinet ministers time to run in byelections to gain seats in the house.

Prentice had promised the byelections will be held before the house sits, but has yet to say when and where the three of them will run.

Government house leader Diana McQueen also announced that two controversial pension reform bills will not be brought back.

The government shelved the legislation this past spring over concerns it would drastically slash retirement payouts for public sector workers.

Finance Minister Robin Campbell has been tasked with finding a new way to make sure pensions are sustainable.
