Alberta parties wants full disclosure on Progressive Conservative trust fund

Alberta opposition parties want the Progressive Conservatives to disclose how much money they have in a trust fund the party has been dipping into for decades.

EDMONTON — Alberta opposition parties want the Progressive Conservatives to disclose how much money they have in a trust fund the party has been dipping into for decades.

The governing Tories passed a law in 1977 making such trust funds illegal, but excluded their own party from the legislation.

At the time the Progressive Conservatives controlled 69 seats in the 75-seat legislature.

The Wildrose and NDP say the fund has been kept secret for years and effectively stacks the deck against other parties.

Elections Alberta say the trust fund is legal and the Tories file financial statements about how much money they transfer from the fund to the party, but don’t have to report how much money is in the fund.

Progressive Conservative party officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
