Alberta RCMP want to remind drivers to be extra aware and vigilant about road safety during the long weekend on provincial roadways.

RCMP said with the return of summer festivals and no health restrictions, there is increased mobility and activity across the province.

“As road traffic tends to be busier in the summer months, the likelihood of collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists is higher,” said the RCMP in a statement.

RCMP encourage drivers to:

• Obey the posted speed limit and follow the rules of the road. With everyone maintaining the same flow of traffic, other motorists will be better able to anticipate your actions.

• Be patient and maintain composure while driving, especially in areas of construction or busy roadways.

• Research and plan routes ahead of time by monitoring 511 Alberta for traffic updates. Have a passenger monitor traffic apps for real-time updates for congestion or collisions on the road.

• Never get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle when under the influence of drugs or alcohol – it’s the number one reason for deaths on Alberta roads.
