Alberta’s natural splendours spotlighted at Red Deer’s First Friday gallery openings

Many local art exhibits have receptions on Friday, Nov. 4

Alberta’s multifaceted landscapes are featured in various shows during Red Deer’s First Friday gallery openings in November.

Sunsets near Joffre were viewed through two pairs of artistic eyes to produce works in the latest show at the Kiwanis Gallery in the Red Deer Public Library.

The Red Deer Arts Council presents A Kaleidoscopic Mirror: Works by Tracie Stewart-O’Brien and Judy Murray-Spenceley, which runs to Nov. 27. Judy’s photos of sunsets are juxtaposed with Tracie’s paintings. Nature gave the two artists a sense of appreciation for the simple things in life during the pandemic. A First Friday gallery reception will be held Nov. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Wild Beauty: Portraits of Alberta spotlighting the works of gallery owner Carol Gilchrist and guest artist Kristen Federchuk at the Riverlands Studio and Gallery at 5123-48th St. The artists have captured views from the Rocky Mountains to the rolling plains, highlighting the diversity of Alberta landscapes. A First Friday reception will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Some Red Deer Polytechnic visual arts students will be showing their works at the Artribute Arts School in Red Deer’s Old Court House for one night only on Nov. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Eelkje VanderMuellen-Smart’s impressionistic oil paintings are showing in the Painting the Alberta Landscapes show at the Marjorie Wood Gallery in the Kerry Wood Nature Centre to Dec. 3. A First Friday reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday.

Centering Ourselves, works from 15 members of the Red Deer Pottery Club, are displayed in the Viewpoint Gallery in the Red Deer Arts and Culture Centre 5205-48th Ave. These ceramic pieces are the fruits of personal creative expression and represent functional and decorative uses. The show runs to Nov. 4 to Dec. 22. There will be a First Friday reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

Andrea dillingham-lacoursiere is showing heirlooms, a display of her acrylic works inspired by pandemic-sparked ideas of sustainability and the state of the Earth at the at the Velvet Olive Lounge.

The two and three-dimensional works of various local artists will be featured this month in the Celebration of Six Years of Arts and Culture at A-plus Gallery and Unique Collections, Unit 203, 4919-49th Street. A reception will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday.

The group show Right Up My Alley is on at the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre until Nov. 19. These students of instructor Christel Langen have been meeting weekly to advance their art skills. A First Friday reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Boultbee Project, mixed-media works by Paul Boultbee, and In a Class of His Own, drawings by Jim Westergard, are continuing at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery to Nov. 19.

Alberta acrylic landscape paintings by Audrey Rits are showing at the Corridor Community Gallery downstairs in the Red Deer Recreation Centre from Nov. 4 to Feb. 2.
