Police say alcohol and speed were factors after a vehicle, reported stolen, crashed near Ponoka, killing one teen and sending another to hospital.

Early Sunday morning, Ponoka RCMP were called to a single vehicle collision on Range Road 254 about 12 km north of Ponoka near Meniak Road. The driver and the passenger of the vehicle were trapped. Police responded to the scene with the Ponoka Fire Department and EMS.

According to Ponoka RCMP, the vehicle had left the snow-covered gravel road and rolled several times.

The 19-year-old male driver was declared dead at the scene. The 18-year-old male passenger was transported to Ponoka Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle involved was reported stolen from a residence in Ponoka 10 minutes before the collision. Police said the vehicle had been left running to warm up and was unattended at the time of the theft.

Both the driver and passenger were from Maskwacis, formerly known as Hobbema, and the name of the deceased is not being released at this time.
