Twenty charges were dismissed at a trial on Friday in Red Deer provincial court after the judge ruled the suspect’s common-law wife could not be forced to testify.

Charges against Trevor Norman Legge, 30, originally from Grand Falls, Nfld., included failure to stop for police, mischief, and several weapons and property offence charges.

Charges were laid after the Aug. 25 incident.

Prior to any testimony or evidence being presented at Friday’s trial, Judge K.L. Rostad ruled that Legge’s common-law wife could not be forced to testify.

Crown prosecutor Wayne Silliker said he could not proceed with the trial without the civilian witness and all charges against Legge were dismissed.
