SLAVE LAKE — Residents of Slave Lake have been given the green light to head home.

Officials say everyone is welcome back in the town Friday, almost two weeks after people were forced to flee a wildfire that torched a third of the community.

Officials say that the area is now safe, the nearby forest fires are under control, and that necessities like power and water are back on.

The return will be rolled out in stages over the course of the day.

A boil-water advisory in the town has been lifted.

The May 15 wildfire levelled whole sections of Slave Lake, particularly in the southeast, and forced about 7,000 residents to flee with just a few minutes’ notice.
