An ‘aural feast’ is promised at next Central Alberta Chamber Orchestra concert

Sept. 29 performance is at St. Luke’s Anglican Church

Tunes by Stravinsky, Bernstein and Prokofiev are on the “mouth-watering” menu at Central Alberta Chamber Orchestra’s first concert of a new season.

Musical Minestrone “will treat you to a five course dinner of music about food with dinner music selections from the chamber music repertoire,” states a release from the orchestra.

The “aural feast” of 20th Century music — to be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 at St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Red Deer and at the same hour on Saturday Sept. 30 at Trinity United Church in Coronation — includes many favourites, from ragtime to showtime.

”Our musical dinner begins with… the March from Sergei Prokofiev’s opera The Love for Three Oranges. Then on to William Bolcom’s Lime Jello, Marshmallow, Cottage Cheese Surprise.

“Along the way, we feature the Ballad for Alphorn and Strings and Amazing Grace for Alphorn and Strings with solo alphorn played by Louise McMurray.” (McMurray’s alphorn was built in Red Deer by her husband, Adam Newman.)

Also featured on the concert bill are Buhuslav Martinu’s de Revue la Cuisine, Leonard Bernstein’s Le Bonne Cusine, and Igor Stravinsky’s Ragtime, with Bob’s Chill Rag, and Spaghetti Rag.

“Of course, you can’t have a meal without dishes from which to eat, so Ralph Vaughn Williams provides us with the March Past of the Kitchen Utensils from The Wasps.”
