A Red Deer mother is angry after someone slashed a tent with her eight-year-old son inside early Sunday morning in Clearview.

Deanna Redford, 29, said her son Kaylen was sleeping in a tent on her neighbour’s front yard when it was slashed three times, with one slit coming dangerous close to her son.

“If (the blade) had been one inch longer, two inches longer, it would have got Kaylen in the head for sure,” Redford said about the incident that occurred at about 2 a.m. on Cameron Crescent.

A young friend of Kaylen’s and the friend’s father were sleeping in a nearby tent. The father came to Kaylen’s assistance.

She suspects teens who were kicked out of the party at a nearby residence are to blame. Police are investigating.

Her son is still upset about what happened.

“Kaylen can’t let it go right now.”

Redford wants anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or Red Deer City RCMP.

She warned Red Deer residents should also be more vigilant about what is happening in their own neighbourhoods.

“I think that the community needs to be more aware of what’s going on and see what we can do to turn it around.”
