Twelve female artists will battle on the canvas next month to support some of Central Alberta’s most excellent women.

Art Battle Red Deer, in support of the Women of Excellence Awards and Red Deer and District Community Foundation, will take place at the Radisson Hotel April 6.

At the event, painters will be divided into two groups and have 20 minutes to turn blank canvases into works of art using brushes, palette knives or any non-mechanical implements. The winner of each group will then battle in a head-to-head final round.

At the end of the battle, the audience will vote for a winner and bid on paintings through a silent auction.

Kristine Bugayong, RDDCF chief executive officer, said she’s excited to broaden the awareness for the Women of Excellence Awards.

“Women of Excellence is a platform for women to share their stories … and to inspire other people,” said Bugayong. “People get inspired by art, so this is another platform for women artists to showcase their art and amplify their stories.”

Teaming up with Art Battle Red Deer was an easy decision, Bugayong added.

“There was this synergy between the two sides. We were interested, they were interested so there you go – it all worked out,” she said.

Two Women of Excellence Award nominees, Chelsea Bootsman and Emily Thomson , will compete in the live painting event.

Joe Larsen, Art Battle Red Deer organizer, said he’s happy to team up the the RDDCF.

“When you donate something, it’s not the recognition I’m looking for, it’s that ‘wow’ feeling. It’s a great feeling to donate money,” Larsen said.

The last Red Deer battle was held in February. Battle attendees always enjoy themselves, said Larsen.

“It’s very interactive. While the artists are painting people are walking around them and watching their masterpiece unfold,” he said.

Tickets for April 6’s Art Battle can be purchased at the RDDCF building (4901 48 St. in Red Deer) or online at artbattle.ticketfly.com/event/1654386.

Art Battle happens in cities across North America, including Vancouver, Toronto and New York – there has been more than 600 events.
