Various kinds of art — from tattoos to Lego portraits and painting — can be seen at Red Deer galleries in July.
Mary’s World, Paintings and Drawings by Carol Lynn Gilchrist, are showing at the Kiwanis Gallery in the Red Deer Public Library until Aug. 27. This show, presented by the Red Deer Arts Council, was inspired by the Red Deer artist’s response to the nature poetry of late Pulitzer Prize winner Mary Oliver. There’s a First Friday opening reception on July 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 6:15 p.m.
Handmade by You is a show by young artists from Youth HQ and the Boys and Girls Club of Red Deer. It’s on until Aug. 30 at the Red Deer Arts Council Community Gallery at Unit 6, 4919-49th St. Three art instructors through the Red Deer Arts Council, worked with the youths in the creation of interesting works exploring 2D and 3D media. The First Friday reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. Summer Gallery Hours: Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Futility Index, digital photography by Red Deer conceptual artist Emily Promise Allison, is continuing at the Viewpoint Gallery in the City of Red Deer’s Culture Services Centre until July 28. There will be a First Friday reception until 8 p.m. with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m.
Local painters Stephanie Gonzalez-Cediel and Brenda Smith are showing their works at the Solorzano Spa Cafe and Wine Bar, 4631-50th St. from July 6 to 10. (please call 403-596-9492 to book a viewing). There will be a First Friday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. with the artists.
Nature’s Gifts and the Nature of Colour, landscape paintings by Kelvin Christensen are showing at the Velvet Olive Lounge from July 7 to Aug. 31. There will be a First Friday reception from 5-7 p.m.
The exhibit Body Language: Reawakening Cultural Tattooing of the Northwest is continuing to show until Sept. 30 at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery. There will be an opening reception on First Friday from 5-8 p.m. Local drummer and singer Dean Johnson will perform at 6 p.m.
Indigenous Portraits in Lego, by Ponoka artist Greg Sawisky, can be viewed at Fort Normandeau until Aug. 30. There will be no First Friday reception. This exhibit is a collection of seven portraits of Indigenous Elders and Chiefs recreated using Lego, paired with historic information about the subject and a copy of the archival photo that inspired the portrait. The show continues to Aug. 30.
