HALIFAX — A storm that is working its way towards the Maritimes is expected to lose its hurricane strength when it gets to the region on Saturday.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre says it expects Arthur to be a strong post-tropical storm with sustained winds of 65 kilometres an hour or more.
It says winds of that strength are possible over parts of the region before the storm arrives Saturday.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Arthur became a hurricane earlier today, with maximum sustained winds of about 120 kilometres an hour.
Arthur threatened to give North Carolina a glancing blow on Friday, prompting thousands of vacationers and residents celebrating Independence Day to leave parts of the state’s popular but flood-prone Outer Banks.
Much of the North Carolina coast was under a hurricane warning.
