The City of Red Deer is encouraging artists to submit portfolios for the first stage of a public art competition for the recently renovated Intermediate School.

New public art will be placed on centrally located walls (either drywall or modular partition) throughout the building. There are 11 unique opportunities, and artists will be selected through an open, two-stage competition.

Any artist working in two or three-dimensional media is invited to apply. Up to 15 short-listed artists will receive a stipend of $500 to submit a detailed proposal in February 2022.

Artists may propose to create artworks for multiple walls if there is conceptual linkage. The Public Art Commission will select finalists whose proposals respond best to the site. The finalists will be notified in March 2022 and will be required to complete their project in summer 2022.

Artists will need to submit several items as part of their application, which is due on Jan. 4, 2022. They need to submit a statement that details interest in the project, demonstrates relevant experience, ability and general artistic approach, a CV and references as well as sample projects, including scale, budget, materials and relevance. Images should be limited to a maximum of 10.

Applications may be submitted as a single PDF document attachment (max. 10 MB) by email, to culturemailbox@reddeer.ca with the subject line “Public Art Submission.”
