Families are invited to have a “whale of a good time” this Heritage Day Monday at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery.

Hives and Tides Heritage Day at the museum will feature some imaginative entertainment by Calf Skit improvisers, as well as art activities and an inflatable whale.

“Come and explore sweet and salty worlds” by dropping-in on Monday, Aug. 1, 2022 from 1-4 p.m. for the free event. The museum is located at 4525-47A Ave.

Current exhibits — In Adoration of the Precarious Bee, by ceramicist Dawn Detarando, and Tracing Tides: A Topographical Investigation, by mixed-media sculptor Lyndal Osborne — show why everybody needs to take care of our environment.

“We hope families (are) inspired to recycle and reconsider pesticide use. We have had fun planning our event around the theme of bees and oceans,” says Lynn LeCorre, the museum’s education co-ordinator.

Participants are encouraged to bring clean and dry recyclables to use to help create a Weaving for Whales art installation. They will qualify for an entry into a draw to win a MAG membership and MAG BAG art kit.

Accepted recyclables are water bottles, plastic cutlery, plastic grocery bags, plastic drink rings (6-pack), drinking straws, plastic drink lids (coffee cups etc.).

In the event of inclement weather, the event will move indoors with a mini whale for the Improvised Storytelling performances.

LeCorre said, “We are excited to be hosting Calf Skit performances and we thank FCSS for the use of their large inflatable whale.”
