A new STEM Camp Series designed for junior high and high school students has come to Red Deer for the first time.
The first of two Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) STEM Series day camps took place May 3 at Red Deer Polytechnic. The event will return to the same location Wednesday, May 10.
These sessions aim to give students hands-on exposure to the engineering technology profession.
Both ASET STEM Camp Series day camps involve 16 students from Wolf Creek Public Schools. Students from Bentley School, Alix-MAC School, Lacombe Outreach School and Eckville Junior/Senior High School attended the May 3 day camp. A group from Rimbey Junior Senior High School will attend the May 10 event.
The event has students from all schools participate in workshops to familiarize them with what it is like to work as an electrical engineering technologist and mechanical engineering technologist.
An electrical engineering technology workshop will teach students to identify electrical components with a specific function and put together an electrical system using these parts. A second workshop, for mechanical engineering technology, will instruct them in the assembly of the mechanical components of the car, resulting in a finished product: a remote control car ready to race.
“The Camp Series opens a window to a whole new world of post-secondary possibilities, and encourages youth to develop valuable skills that will be in demand for years to come,” said Barry Cavanaugh, ASET CEO.
In between workshops, students will learn about the difference between engineering technology and engineering professions and the many disciplines and occupations that exist within engineering technology.
The ASET STEM Camp Series is geared to help address a nationally recognized STEM skills shortage. ASET is the professional self-regulatory organization for engineering technologists and technicians in Alberta, and currently represents approximately 17,000 members.
