ASIRT investigating fatal shooting on O’Chiese First Nation

ASIRT is investigating a fatal officer involved shooting on O’Chiese First Nation over the weekend. The man who was killed was allegedly in a confrontation with police and brandishing an axe.

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is looking into the circumstances surrounding a fatal RCMP officer-involved shooting on O’Chiese First Nation near Rocky Mountain House.

On April 3, Rocky Mountain House RCMP were called to a disturbance by a man who was jumping on vehicles. After receiving information about the whereabouts of the man, officers went to a residence and it was answered by a 24-year-old man known to police.

About an hour after police arrived at the call, after waiting for approval to enter the residence, the man came out of the residence and based on the available video, looked to be carrying an axe. During a confrontation, an officer fired several rounds from his service pistol at the man.

Officers administered first aid to the man before EMS who attended confirmed the man had died.
