ASIRT to investigate use of force during Maskwacis RCMP arrest

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the use of force during a Maskwacis RCMP arrest last weekend.

On March 26, Maskwacis RCMP received a complaint of two individuals discharging a firearm in the Samson town site. Officers located and arrested two individuals, and seized a loaded sawed off shotgun and a loaded sawed off .22 rifle.

RCMP have charged a 28-year-old Maskwacis man and an 18-year-old Maskwacis man with five firearms offences and resisting arrest. Both individuals have been released with court set for April 14 at the Wetaskiwin Provincial Court House.

During the arrest, one suspect sustained injuries for which he was treated by EMS and released. As a result of an regular internal review into the arrest, RCMP have advised ASIRT, which will initiate an investigation.

The duty status of the officer involved is under review.
